Today's Labor Force

Families

In 2004, 82.3% of the nation's 75.9 million families had at least one employed person, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Employment Characteristics of Families in 2004 (June 9, 2005). Asian families were the most likely to include an employed member (89.3%), followed by Hispanic (86.7%), white (82.5%), and African-American families (78.1%). (See Table 1.6; these data include families that may have members who are beyond the generally accepted working age.)

Employment Characteristics of Families in 2004 also revealed that about 5.6 million American families (7.4% of all families) had at least one person who was unemployed in 2004. Overall, 70% of families that included an unemployed person also contained at least one employed family member. White and Asian families were considerably less likely to have an unemployed person (6.6% and 6.7%, respectively) than were African-American (12.7%) or Hispanic (10.2%) families. (See Table 1.6.)

The BLS further reported that both spouses were employed in about half of the nation's 57.2 million married-couple families in 2004. That same year, there were about 11.7 million married-couple families (20.5%) in which only the husband was employed outside the house, a slight increase from 11.4 million in 2003. In nearly 3.9 million married-couple families (6.7%) only the wife worked in 2004. More than 9.4 million married-couple families (16.5%) included no working members, though many in this group were retirees. (See Table 1.7.)

In 2004 the likelihood of having an employed family member was greatest for families maintained by men (84.6%), with married-couple families almost as likely (83.3%). Families maintained by women were least likely to have an employed family member (75.7%). (See Table 1.7.) Families headed by men were less likely to include an unemployed member (551,000) than families maintained by women (1.52 million). (See Table 1.8.)

About eight of ten married-couple families (82.5%) with an unemployed member also contained at least TABLE 1.2 Employment status by selected characteristics, 2004–05 "5. Employment Status of the Civilian Noninstitutional Population by Sex, Age, and Race," in Employment and Earnings, U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, January 2006, http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat5.pdf (accessed January 9, 2006)one employed family member in 2004. In contrast, among families experiencing unemployment in 2004, 57.5% of families that were headed by a single man also included an employed person. Among households with an unemployed member headed by single women, only 45.5% also included an employed person. (See Table 1.8.)

Families with Children

According to the BLS in Employment Characteristics of Families in 2004, both parents were employed in 60.6% of married-couple families with children under eighteen years old in 2004. In 31.2% of two-parent families, the father, but not the mother, was employed.

The proportion (40.2%) in which the father, but not the mother, was employed was much higher among families with preschool children (under six years of age) than it was in families whose youngest child was six to seventeen years old (23.8%). (See Table 1.9.)

In 2004 more than nine of ten fathers (94.1%) and seven of ten mothers (70.4%) were labor-force participants. Among the mothers, the participation rate for those who were unmarried (77.1%; single, widowed, divorced, or separated) was higher than the rate for married mothers (67.8%). (See Table 1.10.)

In 2004 the unemployment rate of married mothers with children under eighteen years old was 3.7%, compared with 9.7% rate for unmarried mothers, according to the BLS in Employment Characteristics of Families in 2004. The unemployment rate for mothers with preschool children (7.1%) was higher than the rate for mothers whose youngest child was of school age (4.5%). (See Table 1.10.)

In 2004 more than half (52.9%) of all mothers with a child under one year old were in the labor force. This proportion rose among mothers with children two years of age (62.1%). Most mothers of children under three years old worked in 2004, but unmarried, divorced, separated, and widowed mothers with young children were more likely to be in the labor force (64.5%) than were married mothers with children the same age (55.3%). In 2004, 56.6% of single mothers with children under one year old were in the workforce, compared with 51.7% of married mothers with children the same age. Unmarried mothers of children under three years old also experienced higher rates of unemployment than their married counterparts. The unemployment rate for single mothers of children under three years old in 2004 was 16.6%, compared with 4.4% among mothers who were married TABLE 1.4 Labor force status of high school and college students, 2004 "Table 2. For those with children under one year old in 2004, the unemployment rate among single mothers was 19.7%, compared with 4.7% for married mothers with children the same age. (See Table 1.11.)

Because of rounding, sums of individual items may not equal totals.
